West Midlands Stations Alliance - we're making Stations as Places
The West Midlands Stations Alliance (WMSA) brings together the West Midlands Railway business unit of West Midlands Trains, Network Rail and West Midlands Rail in a unique and innovate alliance of train operator, infrastructure owner and local government to manage and enhance stations in the region.
The WMSA approach works within the rail industry's existing station ownership and contractual structures, with partners working together to identify and secure funding to enable an agreed programme of station enhancements to be developed and delivered.
The opportunity is to bring together parties to work jointly to ensure that all available funding sources are tapped into.
The vision of WMSA is embodied in its mission statement:
"We will develop stations as quality, accessible gateways between communities and the railway, supporting the changing needs of our passengers, residents and visitors.
Stations in the West Midlands will be community assets, supporting the wellbeing and development of the areas they serve through involving local community and business."
The strategic objectives set under the WMSA formal framework agreement aim to:
Cllr Mark Winnington, chair of the West Midlands Rail Executive and cabinet member for economic growth with Staffordshire County Council, said:
"Our rail stations are at the heart of the communities they serve, and yet many have been under used.
"Through the Alliance we will look to transform our stations into more welcoming places, not just for the thousands of commuters who use them each day but for the wider communities they serve. If we can also offer facilities to shops and businesses or groups, this will help to create jobs."
One brand new initiative launched under the West Midlands Stations Alliance is called 'Stations as Places' aimed at putting railway stations at the heart of the communities they serve.
'Stations as Places' is part of our ongoing commitment to making stations better places for everyone. Through the West Midlands Stations Alliance, we work in partnership with local authorities, Network Rail, West Midlands, community groups including our Community Rail Partnerships and businesses to make stations more welcoming and attractive.
We are creating a series of prospectuses for every station on the network, based on local knowledge and research. This process will allow us to work together with local communities and businesses to improve the station environment and the overall customer experience.
For every prospectus we'll be examining things like vacant property opportunities, facilities at the station, cycle and car parking, how and why people travel and accessibility. Each station prospectus will vary, but they often include:
